Thonggun Pavilion

The Thonggun Pavilion stands in the Uiju town of Uiju County, North Phyongan Province.
It was known long as one of the eight sceneries of the Kwanso (said to be the famous areas of Phyongan provinces) for its resourceful architecture of the Korean nation and the beautiful landscape.
Originally it was used as a northern general’s terrace. Being on the highest peak of Mt. Samgak on the Uiju fortress it commands the River Amnok below and its vicinity, a favorable place for the military command.
It was first built in the first half of the Koryo dynasty (918-1392)
Its former self dates back to the Koguryo time(B.C. 277-A.D 668) since the Uiju fortress was first built at the time  and renewed to the expansion basis to the fortress of the Uiju seat.
The present one is a renewal of 1478’s.
It has undergone many repairs since 1538, yet still preserves the looks of the 15th century.
