Korean Folk Song “Arirang”

There are many legends of Korean folk song “Arirang”and the etymological explanations of its origin. Typical is a legend “Song Bu and Ri Rang”.
According to the legend “Song Bu and Ri Rang”, a boy named Ri Rang and a girl named Song Bu slaved for a landlord of a village as hired hands. In a year of bad harvest they took part in a peasant rising in their locality before setting up house by marriage in Mt. Surak to find a refuge.
Later, Ri Rang resolved to return to the battle field and parted from his dear wife and crossed a pass. At that time Song Bu sang a song missing Ri Rang, which became the song “Arirang”
The legend tells that this song has a long history.
