Kwangbop Temple

Kwangbop Temple in Taesong Dong, Taesong District, Pyongyang, dates back to Koguryo (B.C. 277-A.D. 668).
Quite many temples were put up in Pyongyang area in the period of King Kwanggaetho of Koguryo.
Kwangbop Temple was reconstructed in the year 1727. It was completely destroyed after air raids in July 1952 when the Korean War was at its height. It was rehabilitated to the original state in 1990.
The layout of the temple with the buildings on four sides around the tower is a way used in the period of Koguryo.
The main temple of the Kwangbop Temple is two storied gabled house.
Inscribed on the monument to the Kwangbop Temple is a legend on the 9 dragons and 99 ponds in Mt. Taesongguryong.
The temple in scenic Mt. Taesong is a valuable cultural heritage showing the developed architecture of the then Korean nation. It is well preserved as relics of national treasure.
