The Korean udometer was invented and used by the Korean people in the middle of 15^th century.

It was invented and used in August 1441 to start with the hight of 40 centimeters and the diameter of 16 centimeters. In the process, a more improved and sophisticated rain gauge of 30 centimeters high and 14 centimeters across was made.

The appliance consisted of support made of stone and a round box on it for rainwater catching. The depth of standing rainwater in the box enabled to measure the amount of rain.

Such devices were installed in the yards of central as well as local government offices. It became a rule for each town to inform relevant province of the time when the rain began falling, the time when the weather became fine after rain and the amount of rainwater in between. Then each province reported them to Seougwan, the central organ, where they are compiled to be registered.

The Korean udometer, the first measurement device of rainfall amount in the world, is a cultural legacy associated with the creative talents of the Korean nation.
