The old man in the picture is Prof. and Dr. Pak Sung Nam, People’s Scientist and candidate academician of Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences. He was 80 years old last year.
However, he often says he is 63 by true age.
It can be explained by his journey of life. He spent his childhood in Japan.
All his family members lived on a small-sized tenant patch of field, suffering from national discrimination and poverty.
His parents managed to save a small sum of money for their children’s tuition fee. He used to get up early in the morning to draw a cart of manure and went around from house to house to sell cow’s milk before going to school.
Japanese students made fun of him for bad smell and the teachers kept away from him with frowned face.
He could not avoid maltreatment and humiliation in Japan where money was almighty.
Being unable to face their children’s miserable life any more, their parents finally made up their minds to send him to a Korean school in town.
